First. Be sure that you have the most current Adobe Reader installed on your computer ... that would be version 6.0 or higher. You can find out if it is already installed by looking at your Programs menu ... or by clicking on the print-friendly Adobe PDF icon on any MyDisciplemaker document or course you would like to print (it won’t work if you don’t have it). If it does work, the window that opens will identify which version is installed. If you do not have the current version (or any version), click here free Adobe Reader to download your free up-to-date copy. It is easy.
Downloading a MyDisciplemaker document. This is also easy. Just click the print-friendly Adobe PDF icon in the left column of the document or course you would like to print. Actually, you will be able to do a lot more than print it.
A warning window may open. You may see a warning window on your screen asking if you trust us. I hope you do ... trust us, that is. Click the appropriate button to continue downloading the document.
Download and save? Downloading a document or course can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes ... depending on its size ... and depending on your Internet connection speed. Saving the downloaded document has advantages over just working with it online in your browser ... more options are available. Saving the document means you can work with it off-line rather than downloading it for every use ... a definite time advantage. You can print without saving the file ... and even search for a verse, word, or phrase. However, changing the page size for readability, or hearing a page read to you, can only be done with a saved version.
Printing without saving. It is easy to print without saving when printing shorter documents or a single page, lesson, map, or chart. However, longer chapters (up to 20 pages) and full courses (up to 120 pages each) may be easier for you and your printer if you print them off-line from a saved copy.
Saving and accessing a saved document. Click the Save a Copy icon in the upper left of the Adobe Reader window ... choose and remember where you save the file. When you are ready to use the saved document, open your Abode Reader program. Then open your saved document by clicking the Open icon in the upper left. Choose your saved file and double click it ... or highlight and click Open. All navigation options will function. You will be able to search the document. You can even have the page or document read to you ... although the reader is not the greatest.
Printing. You can print the whole document by clicking the Print icon. To print part of a document, use the print window options. You can also expand the Bookmarks menu window to the right to determine which pages you would like to print.
Updated documents or courses. A newer version may become available after you have saved your copy. Check What’s New for announcements of updated versions ... then download the new one.
Bookmarks. These are available only on the longer courses to take you directly to a chapter. Click on the Bookmarks tab ... see the screen-capture picture below. That will give you direct access to each chapter. Click the chapter title in the bookmark menu, and you are there. If the menu stays on the screen, but you do not want it to, click Options above the menu and click Hide After Use to check it. Un-check it to keep the bookmarks on your screen.
Accessing a page. You can access a specific page by using the scroll bar at the far right of your screen. Alternatively, you can use the Pages tab on the left. Alternatively, you can use the variety of navigation buttons at the bottom center of your screen. Alternatively, you can scroll with the wheel on your mouse ... or scroll zone on your touch pad. Alternatively, you can use the Hand Tool ... a little left of center immediately above the document.
Searches. You can search for a specific word, phrase, or verse by clicking the Search icon. Generic partial word searches can be more fruitful. Boolean searches and the use of an asterisk do not work.
Page display. Some useful page display options are available via the icons at the bottom right of your screen.
E-mailing a document to a friend. You can easily send a copy of, or link to, a MyDisciplemaker document or course ... just click the Email icon.
Options for saved documents only. Interesting options are available for saved documents only ... accessed via the Adobe Reader View, Tools, Window, and Help menus found at the top of the Reader window when you access a saved document. You can change the page size for easier reading from the View menu. From that same View menu, you can have the page or document read to you. Zooming is available from the Zoom icons or from the Tools menu. Help that is more detailed is available from the Help menu. Adobe reader has many useful options ... play around with it to learn how to get the benefits that best suit your needs.
